Royal Canadian Legion Branch #48

The Royal Canadian Legion is the largest veterans' organization, with more than over 400,000 members and affiliates in Canada.

The Legion is a non-profit, dues-supported, fraternal organization with approximately 1,600 branches in Canada, 21 in the United States and 4 in Germany. The Legion receives no financial assistance from any outside agency and membership is open to all Canadian veterans as well as serving and former members of the Canadian Forces, RCMP, The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, other police forces and their dependents, and Canadians who subscribe to the purposes and objects of the organization.

The Royal Canadian Legion has assumed a major responsibility for perpetuating the tradition of Remembrance in Canada. Each year the Legion organizes and runs the National Poppy-Remembrance Campaign to remind Canadians of the tremendous debt we owe to the more than 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the defense of Canada during two world wars the Korean War and other missions around the world. Contributions made during the campaign are used to assist needy veterans, ex-service members and their families. - from www.legion.ca

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #48 in Port Blandford was built and opened in 1964. The Legion also supports programs for seniors, particularly through direct community-level activities. The Legion's Youth Program provides scholarships, bursaries and support to activities, such as, the RCSCC Clode Sound Sea Cadets in Port Blandford. The Legion in Port Blandford plays a major part in promoting community spirit through its sponsoring of annual events such as the Remembrance Day Ceremonies, Halloween Costume Dance, Christmas Parade and Dance, and the New Year's Ball.

Alton United Church

Robert Oakley started the United Church around 1903 and the first services were held in 1905 .

This church was torn down and replaced by a new and more convenient church in 1978. The new church is called the Alton United.

St. Aidan's Anglican Church

St. Aidan's Anglican Church has Sunday Services each week at either 11 a.m. or 7 pm. Once a month the Church has an ecumenical service of Prayer & Praise at either St. Aidan's Anglican Church or Alton United Church.

St. Aidan's Church of England was built in the early 1900?s, however services were held in the school chapel from 1900 to 1918 with Arthur Sharpe who was both a school teacher and lay reader. The church?s cornerstone was laid by Bishop Hones on August 29, 1907. The church was officially opened on June 19, 1918 by Rev. Augustus C. Bagley and H. W. Facey.

Marina Association

The Port Blandford Marina Association organized the renovation of the community wharf. The Association has plans for future development and welcomes new volunteers.

Recreation Association

The Port Blandford recreation Association is a group of residents involved with providing active living activities in Port Blandford.

One of the P. B. Recreation Association's major projects is the development of the newly built outdoor skating rink adjacent to the ball field area on School Road. This project was many years in the making and finally in 2003, after a lot of research and effort, the dream of an outdoor skating rink became a reality. Now the rink is used and enjoyed by residents of all ages.

The Recreation Association also hold an annual Halloween Costume Party for the children of the town.

Northwest River Conservation Group

The Northwest River Conservation Group is committed to the Conservation and Protection of the Northwest River. We know that working together gets results. The Northwest River Atlantic Salmon Conservation Group is proud to partner with Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Parks Canada to protect and preserve our natural heritage.

Port Blandford Volunteer Fire Department

Volunteer membership is available to citizens at 18 years of age and older who are willing to donate some of their time and talents to helping the community. Applications are available at the Town Office. All Active members are expected to attend all meetings and training sessions whenever possible, help clean apparatus after a fire or a training, and help with any fundraisers that the PBVFD hold.
